NFL
Professional football started in the United States originally
under the name ‘American Professional Football Conference’
in 1920. It wasn’t until 1922 that the name was officially
changed to National Football League (NFL). Although the NFL
didn’t exist until ’22, its roots go back to 1869
when Rutgers and Princeton played a college soccer football
game under rules derived from the London Football Association.
This soccer derivative evolved into rugby and over the next
seven years, modern football was born.

NHL
Hockey's strong bloodlines have been evident from the sport's
beginnings. The pursuit of the puck has been passed from father
to son and the NHL has benefited from strong family ties like
the Howes, the Sutters and McNabs. The new issue of Impact!
online magazine looks at some of the connections that make
hockey a family affair.
NCAA.com

Miami Dolphins, a professional football team and one of five
teams in the Eastern Division of the American Football Conference
(AFC) of the National Football League (NFL). The Dolphins
play at Pro Player Stadium in Miami, Florida, and wear uniforms
of aqua, orange, and white. The team is named for the dolphins
that inhabit the coastal waters of Florida.
Jacksonville
Jaguars
The new era in Jaguars football officially begins Sunday.
In keeping with that theme, it was a perfect time to ask:
What qualifies Jack Del Rio to be a head coach? Will he be
successful? Is he ready?
Tampa
Bay Buccaneers
Awarded the National Football League's 27th franchise in 1974
with the first kickoff scheduled for 1976, owner Hugh Culverhouse,
a successful Florida tax lawyer and broker, hired John McKay
as the first coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. McKay had
achieved great success at the University of Southern California
with four national championships in his 16 years and it was
McKay who orchestrated the building process that led to the
Buccaneers' stunning early success.
NHL
Tampa
Bay Lightning
Undoubtedly the highlight of the Lightning's short history
was the opening of their brand new home, the magnificent Ice
Palace in downtown Tampa. As they had done in their 1992 Expo
Hall debut, the Lightning won, 5-3, over the New York Rangers
on October 20, 1996. Three years later, the Ice Palace would
then play host to the 49th NHL All-Star Game on January 24,
1999.
Florida
Panthers
Looking to give the future a nudge, the Panthers have scoured
the NHL for spare parts, coming up with veterans like Lyle
Odelein and Eric Messier. But the best addition will likely
be another defenseman, Mike Van Ryn, who lost his way last
year after a promising rookie season in St. Louis. The Panthers’
defense could sure use the help. Florida gave up the most
shots in the NHL last season. There is no doubting Luongo’s
mettle.
MLB
Florida Marlins
Since the Florida Marlins came to the area in 1993, Major
League Baseball no longer heads north for the summer. Now,
the baseball fans of South Florida can experience first hand
what they have long coveted, a big league team of their own.
Tampa Bay Devil Rays
Although the Devil Rays are the first Major League Baseball
team to host regular season games in the area, Tampa Bay's
big league roots go back more than 85 years. The area has
a very rich professional and amateur baseball history. More
major league spring training games have been played in St.
Petersburg than in any other city.
